Behind any innovation or invention is the wants, desires or needs of one or more people. Going back to stone age if first hominoids were not curious of first encountering a naturally occurring fire from a lightening strike, they would not have in the first instance maintained and kept a fire going. They realised the fire provided warmth or light at night which they desired etc.
