Three basic themes will thread their way through this site:
- Human behaviour: The disciplines of behaviour including psychological, cultural and biological. Includes the context of the situation. Look beyond fear, denial or ignorance which are typically the traits cited in most publications examining societies response to climate change.
- Historical events: From maxims such as “history repeats itself” and “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” History is a valuable source of ideas and inspiration provided suitable historical events are chosen with the pertinent perspective. A single historical event can be viewed through a prism of numerous perspectives.
- Communication: We express our thoughts and feelings; dreams and hopes through language whether spoken, written, visual or actions. A scientist may express a thought through the language of mathematics and logic; a friend may express a feeling through a smile; an artist may express a dream through a painting. In the same manner a person may express a lack of hope or vision with resignation, denial or anxiety.
It will not be the hard sciences of physics or chemistry or simplistic “rational” thought that will be driving proceedings. It will be the softer sciences; the humanities; and arts that come to the front. The focus will be creating an environment of possibilities fuelled by creativity, dreams, and bold visions. This contrasts with an environment dominated by arguments between expert opinions, egos and fear using scientific facts as the weapon of choice.
The issue of climate change will be reframed from the intractably difficult problem it is today to one that may appear on first appearance to be rather pointless. Never mind it will still be done so we can see what can be done with it!
